2. System Requirements
===========================================================================
CATALOG-ON-A-DISK works on IBM XT,AT,386,486 and compatibles, on
monochrome, CGA, EGA and VGA adapters, with DOS 3.1 or higher. No hard
disk is required (although one is suggested for making catalogs). The
files in the shareware version require about 340KB when installed.
If you have been sent CATALOG-ON-A-DISK by a company sending you their
catalog, and you are ONLY using the program to view that catalog you are
not expected to register. However, if you want to use the program to
distribute a catalog you must buy the program. See the section called
"Distribution" in the manual for more information.
3. Upgrading from Earlier Versions
===========================================================================
CONVERTING VERSION 2 FILES TO VERSION 3
There are three easy steps to converting your version 2 files to be
compatible with version 3.
1. File Extensions
Beginning with version three the extensions of the text files you compress
are very important. Rename your old text files as follows (replace
"XXXXXXXX" with the actual name of your file):
XXXXXXXX.TXT All category files with products in them.
XXXXXXXX.FRM All "Special Forms" Files
XXXXXXXX.CAT All files that appear on the screen, but do not fit in the
two categories above. These include FIRST, HEADER,
CMOSHLP, and EXIT.
XXXXXXXX.CTF Catalog text files that do NOT appear on the screen. These
include TOTAL, ORDERINF, and CMHLP.
2. Recompress your files.
Even if your files were already named as listed above, you MUST recompress your
old files using the Version 3 CATCOM. Failing to recompress these files may
result in erratic program behaviour. If you have CATCMP you can write a script
to do this in one pass. Otherwise use CATCOM as you normally would.
3. Using CATCOM set the catalog settings and Help Bar text you want in your
new catalog. (Do not try to use your old CATALOG.INI with the new version.)
4. Important Notes
===========================================================================
1. In the sample catalog the first time you try to add your last order
you won't be able to. This is because there IS no last order until
you print your first order form. From that point on CATALOG.EXE
remembers what was in your last order.
2. The first line in *.CAT files should be blank.
3. As shipped CATALOG-ON-A-DISK prints 59 lines per page when printing a
catalog (or category). Your customers can change the number to match
their printer. For example, if your printer prints 66 lines per page,
start the catalog as follows: CATALOG -L65 (Enter)
Note that the number after "-L" is one less than the maximum number.
This is important so that CATALOG.EXE starts a new page before your
printer does. To change it back you could type: CATALOG -L59 (Enter)
Once this has been done one time CATALOG.EXE remembers the number
until you change it again: in other words you only have to do this once.
5. A NOTE ABOUT OUR BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM
===========================================================================
As of February 1991 our Bulletin Board System (BBS) has been on line.
You may order any EmmaSoft product using the BBS, and registered users may
get technical support there. In addition there is a growing collection of
shareware programs, most notably those written by Association of Shareware
Professionals authors. There is no charge for accessing this board, and
downloads are unlimited (except by the daily time limit). The EmmaSoft
BBS is an approved ASP BBS.
